Donate to the Homeless - Your Help Needed!

Help homeless in Wrexham survive winter!

Every year there are periods when none of the statutory agencies in Wrexham are open to supply food to homeless people. This year services are unavailable from Christmas until 2nd January 2012. AVOW Collection Donation for homeless people in Wrexham will help them see through the festive period. Around 80% of homeless population of Wrexham uses the donated packs each year, this is why your help is so needed. Please donate food, clothes or sleeping bags for homeless and help them get through the cold winter and have a good Christmas!

We are collecting the donations until Monday, 16th December 2011 at both venues: Ty Avow, 21 Egerton Street and the Opportunities Centre at Plas Madoc, in Wrexham. The donations will be given out during opening times at drop in sessions just before Christmas at the Elms, Rhosddu Road, Wrexham.

We are collecting pot noodles, biscuits, crisps, cuppa soups, chocolate and breakfast bars, instant drinks, tea, coffee, hot chocolate, juices and sweets. We also ask for clothes, sleeping bags, blankets and fleeces.

Here’s what SURF volunteer mentors who provide support to service users have to say about the collection:

"I’ve been volunteering twenty one months and found out about AVOW Collection Donation last year. The turning point for me was the generosity of strangers and spirit of homeless people when they were singing Happy Christmas. It’s not easy being homeless when the services are unavailable. It doesn’t matter what class or part of society you are from, you are not immune to it and being homeless can happen to anybody. I wish people had more empathy and don’t judge so easily, homelessness is everybody’s problem."

"After my partner’s death I went downhill, I was evicted from where I was living and found out about Elms in 2009. I started talking to people and received help. Last Christmas, I started helping out with AVOW Collection Donation. This year, I am thoroughly involved in it. These donations help homeless people in Wrexham a lot. Just please buy something extra, while doing shopping, like a packet of noodles and donate it to us. We are mainly asking for food, clothes and warm stuff. Think about things you don’t use at home anymore, they can help others."

The projects work closely with local services which help service users recover from substance misuse issues through their recovery and to move on to have a better fulfilled life, through volunteering, training and group involvement.
